Phil Gribbon

Phil Gribbon was a key figure in Arctic mountaineering and exploration during the ’60s and ’70s through his inspirational and charismatic leadership of a number of expeditions that made over 100 first ascents of peaks of the region. A physics lecturer by profession, he also turned his keen eye to a variety of studies of the Arctic environment, encompassing fields as diverse as ice physics and lichen botany, and resulting in numerous papers in international scientific journals. His mountaineering publishing record is no less impressive, with articles featuring in the Polar Record, Canadian Geographical Journal, Alpine Journal, American Alpine Journal and the Journals of the Scottish Mountaineering Club and Irish Mountaineering Club.
