Kate Phillips

Kate Phillips is a sociology graduate of the University of Glasgow. She became an international social development specialist working in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, where she developed a range of partnerships for social change with community groups, members of trade unions, parliaments and political parties. Working with these partners, she conducted research, trained educators and wrote educational material about the role of such civil groups in establishing rights and building equality. She began her career as a community education worker in Glasgow, with a particular interest in women’s lives and organisations, before establishing the Active Learning Centre, an international charity. The Centre worked with British Government development staff to analyse the causes of poverty, and directed a postgraduate fellowship awarded by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The fellowship, held at the University of Glasgow, brought rights activists from troubled countries in Africa and the Middle East to study civil organisations in Scotland. Kate has a family of four children, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. Bought and Sold, Scotland, Jamaica and Slavery is her first book.
