The Fatal Sleep Highly Commended in BMA Book Awards

The Fatal Sleep Highly Commended in BMA Book Awards The Fatal Sleep, the insightful look into one of Africa's most deadly, and yet marginalised diseases - sleeping sickness - has been Highly Commended in the Popular Science category of the 2008 BMA Medical Book Competition.
The author, Peter Kennedy, has devoted much of his working life to researching sleeping sickness in Africa, and this first-hand account shares his trials and experiences, evoking our empathy with the affected patients, together with an explanation of the disease, including its history and its future. Interweaved with African geography and history, his compassionate story reveals what it is like to be a young doctor falling in love with Africa, and tells of his building of a vocation in the search for a cure for this cruel disease.
The Fatal Sleep is also shortlisted for the main prize in the Popular Science category, whose winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday 9 September.

The Price of Scotland Gains Prestigious Award

The Price of Scotland Gains Prestigious Award

The Price of Scotland, a highly praised history of the ill-fated Darien Project and its role in the subsequent Union between Scotland and England in 1707, was recently awarded the prestigious Hume Brown Senior Prize for Scottish History. This prize is awarded to a previously unpublished author whose work makes an original contribution to Scottish History.
The attempt by the Company of Scotland to establish a colony at Darien in Central America is one of the best known episodes in late seventeenth century Scottish history. The catastrophic failure of the scheme, one of Scotland's worst losses, was followed a few years later by the Treaty of Union in 1707 which dissolved the Company and ended the existence of the Scottish Parliament. Douglas Watt charts the Darien Scheme from its inception to its demise against the financial background of the period, looking at previously unexamined evidence and considering both the political and financial implications of this key moment in history.
