When I first picked up Back o the Net!: Why We Love Scottish Fitba It felt like I was listening to stories I would hear from the terraces, in the pub or on our Supporter’s Bus – each one as unique and defined as the last.

I am a Hearts fan – it is in my blood and part of my family history. My Grandad was brought up in Dalry and it was common knowledge in his house, that Willie Bauld was the King of Hearts. I fell in love from the moment I sat in the stand, overseeing the Tynecastle pitch – feeling the warmth of the raucous cheers and the hurling of abuse to away players.

The joy of this book is the connection each individual will have reading about the team they support – the universal feeling of belonging that is central to the sport.

Now, all these years later as a 25-year-old adult – Hearts and football means just as much to me as it did when I was a child. The nuances more so. The routine, the superstition that I have to wear the same scarf every weekend, the walk down Gorgie Road with my Mum and the seeing of familiar faces of people who are quite simply like extended family.

The aspect that will bring joy even just to the everyday football fan is the scope of clubs that are involved in a project of this size. The most unique characteristic of Scottish football is that fans in every division are loyal, dedicated, passionate and resilient.
