Thomas Muir Memorial Lecture: Gerda Stevenson

  • St Mary's Cathedral Palmerston Place Edinburgh, Scotland, EH12 5AF United Kingdom (map)

I have devoted myself to the cause of the people. It is a good cause. It shall ultimately prevail. It shall finally triumph. – Thomas Muir’s speech from the dock, Edinburgh, August 1793

The Thomas Muir Lecture celebrates the legacy of Thomas Muir through a commitment to the ideals of democracy, liberty and human rights.

This year’s lecture will be delivered by the award-winning poet, playwright, singer-songwriter Gerda Stevenson and will be based on her latest book Quines, a collection of poems in tribute to women of Scotland.

Quines charts the contribution made to Scottish history and society by the remarkable women of Scotland – singers, scientists, politicians, fish-gutters, queens, and dancers, a marine engineer, a salt seller, a whole football team, and many more.

Music will be provided by Ewen Maclean and Phil Alexander, of well known duo Alexander and Maclean, who are composing their own music for the event and teaming up with acclaimed Scottish singer Fiona Hunter.

Doors will open at 7pm, with live music and the lecture will begin at 7.30 pm; it will be followed by a wine reception and book signing that is open to all, details for this will follow.
Tickets for this event are £5.15 (ticket + booking fee) and are available from the Lighthouse events page.
