Where does the campaign for Catalan independence go from here? Come and hear from Clara Ponsatí, formerly a leading Catalan politician, now living in Scotland. The event will be chaired by George Kerevan, former SNP MP for East Lothian, one of Scotland's foremost voices on the Catalan independence movement, on which he has just co-authored a book.
Last year's referendum on Catalan independence captured the imagination of people across Scotland. The parallels are easy to see - a smaller nation striving to regain its independence from a larger neighbour.
The elected representatives of Catalonia have faced imprisonment at the hands of the Spanish government merely for holding a democratic vote. Our speaker, Prof. Ponsatí, faces exactly that threat - she is challenging a warrant issued by the Spanish government for her arrest. Currently head of the School of Economics and Finance at the University of St Andrews, Prof. Ponsatí was education minister in the government of Carles Puigdemont which declared independence from Spain. Few can speak with her knowledge and authority on the current political landscape of Catalonia. George Kerevan's new book Catalonia Reborn: How Catalonia took on the corrupt Spanish state and the legacy of Franco will be on sale at the event.
The event is being hosted by Edinburgh SNP and Yes Edinburgh & Lothians. We are happy to make this event free and everyone who has an interest in the Catalan independence movement is welcome.
