Testimonies of Transition by Marjory Harper

  • National Library of Scotland George IV Bridge Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom (map)

Gathering the oral testimonies of millions of Scots emigrants who in various ways implanted aspects of their Scottish identity in the lands where they settled or sojourned, Marjory Harper explores the experiences of a handful of the two million men, women and children who left Scotland in the 20th century in her book Testimonies of Transition: Voices from the Scottish Diaspora.

Conducting interviews across the world, Harper unites events of the past with the modern through the examination of the migrants’ choice to leave, their arrival in a new land and, for some, the transition of returning home.
