by Kenny MacAskill and Henry McLeish
ISBN: 1 905222 37 8
Why leave Scotland? What has Scotland provided? What has Scotland failed to provide? What does it mean to be Scottish elsewhere in the world? Global Scots is a series of over thirty interviews with highly successful expatriate Scots around the world. The interviewees, all of whom grew up in Scotland - including iconic photographer Harry Benson; Chairman of Walt Disney Consumer Products, Andy Mooney; and comedian/presenter Craig Ferguson - reflect on issues such as identity, sectarianism and dour Scottish Sundays. Although the interviewees vary in age, background and profession, certain values and feelings are universal. They all remain committed to the land they were brought up in, remaining distinctively Scottish no matter where they are in the world, be it Toronto or Tallinn. These voices from afar provide valuable insights into Scotland's role in the modern world. Reflective and often hard-hitting, the perspectives they offer on their native country are enlightening, entertaining and potentially beneficial to a new devolved Scotland.
