It is 1947 and like their colleagues throughout Britain, the Beaton doctors are faced with a dilemma, whether or not to sign up to the State controlled Health Service.
Iain Beaton inherits his father's medical practice, but struggles with family politics as he tries to decide whether to join the new Health Service. Student nurse Alison hopes to marry Iain, but could her career hold out a better future than that of a rural doctor's wife?
Stephen Beaton, plastic surgeon during the war, believes passionately in the new 'free for all' policy, but his own profession looks set to become a plaything of the rich. Long-term nurse Alma will be put out of a job by the new training regulations, and faces the advent of the NHS knowing it will improve the lives of her patients, but uncertain of her own future.
