Books | History | Blind Harry's Wallace
by William Hamilton of Gilbertfield with an Introduction by Elspeth King
ISBN: 0 946487 33 2
This is the first 20th century edition of the original Braveheart story. Its contemporary significance has been brought to prominence through this handsomely produced volume, edited and introduced by the highly respected popular historian, Elspeth King, Director of the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum. This publication is the culmination of a long campaign by Elspeth King to bring Blind Harry's work back into print in an accessible form. The book is illustrated with original, vigorously-executed linocuts by Scottish artist Owain Kirby. The epic verse of Blind Harry is the main source on the life of Wallace. It was written around 1477 and based on the now lost Latin book of John Blair, commissioned by 'the fechting bishop' William Sinclair, Bishop of Dunkeld, to send to the Pope. Blind Harry gathered stories and traditions of Wallace from all over Scotland and sang or recited his verse.
Hamilton's edition, 'wherein the old obsolete words are rendered more intelligible', first published in 1722, was almost certainly the most widely read book in eighteenth century Scotland after the Bible. It inspired Burns to visit many of the sites mentioned and to write a number of poems including Scots Wha Hae. It has been out of print since 1859.
